Montessori infant toddler materials should employ simplicity, conservation of color, isolation of difficulty, and realistic connections whenever possible. Stay away from toys that have loud, busy and contrasting colors which overstimulate and distract the child from any educational benefit the material might have. Try to choose toys that deal with one concept at a time, for example, if the material is to teach colors then the forms should be isolated to a single shape or if working with shapes then there should not be too many conflicting colors. To preserve realistic connections choose infant-toddler toys that show the noise makers and whenever possible avoid toys that are too cartoonish.

Infant Toddler Sensorial - These items were chosen because of their simple color schemes and inherent Montessori sensorial applications. Rumble Walker and Symphony Rattles show the source of the noise makers.Fishbowl materials can be used like the stereognostic bags and used for (blindfolded) identification of the basic shapes. The Fishbowl is also the primary step in object permanence, in seeing the item go in and come out, while the Shape Sorting Cube is more advanced in that the item goes in but can not be seen until it is taken out. The Shape Sorting Cube is self-correcting because there is only one way each shape will fit in the hole. the Stack and Sort Board is self correcting because each different shape has its own consistent color. This board can also be used for introductory counting since there are stacks of 1,2,3,4,and 5 shapes. The Shape Sequencing Board is excellent for graded variation in shapes. Sensorial materials should allow ease in contrasting differences, comparing for similarities or grading sets of a series into a proper order.
