How to get Started - Memorizing Scripture

Our homeschool group was blessed with a priest who gave our children 1-1/2 hours of instruction three days out of each month. He was teaching Apologetics Bible verses to the older kids (5th grade and up) on the first Thursdays of the month and the younger kids (preschool - 4th grade) on the 3rd Thursdays of the month. On the fourth Thursdays of the month he offered Mass (with a potluck lunch to follow) for the entire group.

The following are the verses he gave our kids to memorize:

 

JAMES 2:24

See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

 

JAMES 2:26

For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

 

GALATIANS 5:6

For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

 

I CORINTHIANS 13:2

And if I have the gift of prophecy, and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

 

JOHN 14:15

If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

 

MATTHEW 19:16-17

Now someone approached him and said, "Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?" He answered him, "Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good. If you wish to enter into the life, keep the commandments.

With each group of kids our priest starts out by having the kids recite the Chapter and Verse, for example using the first quote, all the kids recite: "James Chapter 2 Verse 24." Then on the next go around the circle each child recites the first part of the quote: "See how a person is justified by works" and on the 3rd go around the kids recite the 2nd part of the verse: "and not by faith alone." On the fourth go around The kids recite the Chapter, Verse and entire scripture quote and most have memorized the entire quote by that time.
